How Can We Protect Mangroves.

  Nariva Swamp Trinidad Credit: Edison Pargass Mangroves are tropical plants that are suited to loose, wet soils, salt water and submerged by tides on a regular basis. There are more than 50 species of mangroves found all over the world and three types. These are Red, White and Black Mangroves (DEP 2021). It is integral that mangroves be protected as they serve vital purposes to humans and many aquatic species. One of the first steps in doing so is enforcing global knowledge on the importance. Mangroves provide habitats for fish, birds and crustaceans to feed and reproduce, operate as filters for sediment and nutrients, meanwhile reducing erosion and maintaining water quality. They also protect coastlines from storm surges and cyclones, thus acting as a barrier for homes nearby (Department of the Environment and Energy, 2016).
