How Can We Protect Mangroves.

Mangroves are tropical plants that are suited to loose, wet soils, salt water and submerged by tides on a regular basis. There are more than 50 species of mangroves found all over the world and three types. These are Red, White and Black Mangroves (DEP 2021).
It is integral that mangroves be protected as they serve vital purposes to humans and many aquatic species. One of the first steps in doing so is enforcing global knowledge on the importance. Mangroves provide habitats for fish, birds and crustaceans to feed and reproduce, operate as filters for sediment and nutrients, meanwhile reducing erosion and maintaining water quality. They also protect coastlines from storm surges and cyclones, thus acting as a barrier for homes nearby (Department of the Environment and Energy, 2016).
It has been established that Mangroves are extremely important, so why are they so undervalued? And what can be done to prevent destruction? Another step that needs to be done if we want action is to understand the driving force of the loss of these mangroves. Major threats are the result of increasing populations in coastal areas in which mangrove forests are cleared to make space for buildings, pollution in the form of improper garbage disposal which can cover roots and suffocate them as well as runoff of fertilizers from farms.
By simply addressing these issues it can dramatically decrease the quantity of mangroves we lose. Making sustainable choices such as reducing the amount of plastic we purchase or being diligent when buying foods that are sourced unsustainably from mangroves. Finding and supporting local government organizations working to protect these mangroves can also help conservation go a long way (Conservation International, 2022).
Being an advocate and an activist in your community can increase the level of action, talking to family members, friends as well as sharing posts and videos on social media can reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds and spread information quickly. Speaking up about the importance of mangroves and why it needs to be protected can inspire and encourage others to do the same, meanwhile compelling government officials and organizations to become involved (UN Environment Programme , 2021)
A major step is the restoration process that rehabilitates mangrove ecosystems that are slowly being destroyed. When the right information and knowledge is communicated, persons can be more involved in this process such as proper re afforestation methods for the mangroves to thrive. Another method is to simply leave the mangroves for it to prosper on its own, this way it will retain its identity.
For serious action, organizations need to come together on a global scale, funding will be increased further along with scientific research as well as laws and policies that protect coasts, and mangroves. Thus, accelerating conservation. The involvement of the government and private organizations will provide adequate support for proper action (Conservation International, 2017).
Everyone can take steps such as disposing of garbage properly so that pollution is reduced. Also, chemical pollution such as the fertilizer can be used less to prevent damage to mangroves as well as species that live there. There should be little to no driving and walking as this damages delicate mangroves.
As individuals who would be at disadvantages if mangroves are destroyed it should be in our best interest to do our part in conservation. If we all work together, there can be great rewards and the goal of conservation of our mangroves will be accomplished.
